Anatomy of the Liver, Bile, and Pancreas The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body, located in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, just below the diaphragm. It is divided into two main lobes, the right and left lobes, which are further subdivided into smaller functional units called hepatic lobules. The liver receives a dual blood supply from the hepatic artery, which provides oxygen-rich blood, and the portal vein, which carries nutrient-rich blood from the gastrointestinal tract. The liver's histology reveals hepatocytes arranged in plates, separated by sinusoids that facilitate blood flow and metabolic exchange. Bile is a digestive fluid produced by the hepatocytes of the liver. It contains bile salts, cholesterol, and waste products such as bilirubin.
